Week 1, Day 1 —

Knock Down Mahjong Stack Up All the games

How to play

You are the one on the horse. Click a tile and a line of arrows shows the way there. Click it again and off you go. Nothing happens on the first click, so you can measure the whole map before you commit to anything.

The arrows change colour where the day runs out: green is as far as you can get before nightfall, amber is the day after.

You can ride over any ground at all — only water stops you, and trees, boulders and mountains have to be gone round. But the ground is not all the same underfoot, and a day of riding gets you:

Along a road
about 20 tiles
Grass, dirt or scorched ground
about 15 tiles
Rough, stony ground
about 12 tiles
Sand or snow
about 10 tiles
Marsh
about 8 tiles

So a road is worth going out of your way for, and cutting across a corner of marsh to save two tiles usually is not. When the riding runs out, press End day and it comes back in full in the morning.

What is not here yet

This is the first piece of a much bigger game. There is nothing to pick up, nobody to fight and nothing to do inside a town — those come next. What works today is the map, the riding and the calendar.

About this map

The Long Road North. Forty tiles by thirty. Your town, Perrywick, sits in the south-west; Coldharbour sits in the snow in the north-east. Between them is a lake, a mountain range with one pass through it, and a road that goes the long way round.

The whole map is a text file — js/games/kingdoms/maps/starter.js — three blocks of letters, one for the ground, one for the roads and one for the trees and rocks. It can be edited in Notepad.

Every picture in the game is a placeholder drawn in code. The list of them, and how to put your own in, is at the artwork page.
